Australia - Cape Mentelle
Founded in 1972, Cape Mentelle was one
of the first wineries in the region and made its name (and that of
the Margaret River) with its Cabernet Sauvignon, the first wine ever
to win the Jimmy Watson Trophy two years in a row.
Margaret River is surrounded on three
sides by water – Geographe Bay to the north, the Indian Ocean to the
west and the cool Southern Ocean to the south. It includes the
rolling hills of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, which extends 90km
south to north between Capes Leeuwin and Naturaliste and runs only
27km east to west.
Its highly rated vineyards lie on soils of ancient granite, which
have decomposed to ironstone gravels.
The red wines share a tannic background from aging in French and American oak. For the white wines, the aim is to retain fruit flavours, with crisp acidity thanks to the maritime influences.

This Cabernet blend takes its inspiration from the classic red wines of Bordeaux. Cape Mentelle has developed an international reputation for long lived Cabernet and this blend seeks to capture all the qualities of these varieties to create a well rounded, full and rich style. Appearance: Ruby red. Nose: Classic aroma of blackcurrant fruit, aged tobacco, violets and cedary oak. Palate: The palate displays juicy blackberrry fruit, with a restrained mid-palate and subtle well integrated mocha oak. The wine finishes long and clean with textural, savoury tannins. |
