The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of the
Australian wine industry. He was the first qualified winemaker to
work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife,
Nancy, built a successful wine business which has produced
trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959.
Today, the company is headed by Jim’s second son Peter, who took over from his father as Managing Director.

Jim Barry purchased the Lodge Hill vineyard in 1977, as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in Clare.” Situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Valley at an altitude of 480 metres, and is ideal for producing steely, minerally Rieslings, distinctive to the area. The growing season experienced ideal conditions, with good rainfall over the winter and spring months ensuring the vines were in excellent health before the heat of summer arrived. After a hot January, February was slightly cooler with warm days that generally stayed below the mid thirties and allowed the fruit to ripen gently. This wine is pale straw in colour, with lovely lemon and grapefruit citrus aromas. The palate is dry, revealing flinty lemon citrus, with floral orange blossom notes—quite austere and steely—with a zesty finish. A wine to be enjoyed now or after it has aged gracefully. Ideal to consume with chicken and seafood dishes. |

Meet ‘The Cover Drive’s’ girlfriend... Those who know cricket will be aware of the fielding position called ‘Silly Mid On’. Close to the batsman, requiring very good reflexes and always at risk of being struck by the ball off the bat. This second release of ‘Silly Mid On’ Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon is blend of three components; Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc (48%), Clare Valley Sauvignon Blanc (31%) and Clare Valley Semillon (21%). The premium Clare fruit was sourced from our own vineyards and the Adelaide Hills fruit was courtesy of friends in the Adelaide Hills. This wine combines the cut grass and tropical fruit flavours of Sauvignon Blanc with the subtle citrus and lime of Semillon. This Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend is a pristine straw yellow in colour, with green tints. It shows aromas of freshly squeezed passion fruit and fresh grass clippings, with an underlying herbaceousness.
The palate is full and ripe, with a
veritable fruit salad of flavours—including mango, lime,
peach, pear and passion fruit. This wine displays

This wine is deep garnet in colour, with purple tints. On the nose there are intense aromas of varietal fruit, with an underlying layer of complexity. The palate shows vibrant summer berries - primarily mulberry, strawberry and boysenberry, with background nuances of rose petals and spearmint. The 2005 Armagh is inky and impenetrable. It displays elegant, yet brooding aromas, which are highly complex — including boysenberry, plums, blueberries, rose, lavender and spice. The palate shows power, coupled with finesse. A Pandora’s box of fruit flavours, including loganberry, blackberry, plum and mulberry. The oak is integrated almost to the point of being undetectable and the tannin structure makes it approachable now, but will allow for long term ageing — easily 15-20 years. We suggest that the wine is allowed to ‘breathe’ a minimum of two hours before being consumed to fully appreciate the distinctive flavours and aromas. |

On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions in 1950. Sadly, the ground closed in 1996. Soon after Jim Barry purchased the 30 acre property and planted a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. The original pavilion and pitch have been retained, thus preserving an important piece of Coonawarra sporting history. Fruit from this vineyard, along with selected parcels of fruit from our family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been blended to produce a wine that is rich, soft and approachable. This wine shows inky, deep red colour, with a nose of black cherry, briary fruit and dark chocolate. The palate is medium to full bodied, with ripe, black cherry and cassis fruit, subtle integrated vanillin oak with mocha richness. The fine grained, talcy soft tannins support a lingering finish. As with previous releases of ‘The Cover Drive’, the wine displays harmonious balance and can be enjoyed now or will reward cellaring for 2-3 years.
