K1 by Geoff Hardy...
In 1987 Geoff Hardy and his family began
planting 30 hectares of vines with the aim of growing the
highest quality grapes for producing super premium wines.
The site, named Kuitpo (‘ky-po’) Vineyard, is
located along the ridge of the Southwest escarpment of the Mount
Lofty Ranges, at a height of between 300 – 350 meters above sea
level.
The combination of this altitude, climate and
ancient soils has made this site ideal for a premium cool
climate vineyard.
As this vineyard is the first significant
planting in the Kuitpo region, most people refer to it now as
the ‘K1’ vineyard.

K1 Chardonnay is styled to accentuate the
characters of Kuitpo's cool growing conditions and terroir. The
fruit is gently handled to ensure aromatics are retained, with
French oak and malolactic fermentation used to enhance the wine's
purity of fruit character.
The nose of the 2005 K1 Chardonnay plays an
exotic harmony of macadamias, sandalwood, orange zest, and fresh
damp earth overlaid with notes of truffle and sage. The vibrant
aromatics reveal further layers with a touch of warmth, including
mango, white peach and honeydew melon.
These enticing aromas lead into a savoury, nutty
palate with silken texture; incisive acid creates a perfect partner
for food. It finishes with a firm and lasting balance of bright and
clean fruit with gentle texture.
This finely balanced drop will only improve with
time, so be confident of enjoying now and for the next 5-8 years. We
suggest removing from the fridge 15 minutes before serving. |

The Sauvignon Blanc vines from Geoff Hardy's
Kuitpo vineyard are over twenty years of age and are producing
consistently exceptional wines.
The
vines are trained to double cordons and spur pruned to increase
fruit quality. Very subtle addition of barrel fermented Marsanne,
Rousanne and Viognier have enhanced the complexity, character and
body of this vintage and lower than average yield has intensified
grape flavour and aroma.
The wines colour is a brilliant, white-gold with
a hint of green. The nose is cohesive and has encompassing tropical
aromatics of guava, ripe mango, blood orange and lemon zest.
Underneath are smooth components of melted white chocolate, stewed
peach and a delicate touch of asparagus.
A clean and well-structured palate keeps the
tropical flavours with bright acid and a dry finish. This wine is
perfect as an aperitif, as well as being ideally suited to match
with seafood dishes (particularly crustaceans) and contrasts well
with rich cream-based sauces. |

A striking example of a
modern Cabernet Sauvignon/Tempranillo blend synonymous with the
Rioja and Navarra regions of Spain.
This
Cabernet/Tempranillo exhibits a dark ruby/crimson hue with a mauve
rim. Its elegant and integrated bouquet has an array of ripe black
and red fruits with subtle nuances of tobacco leaf in the mix.
Its palate like its nose
is highly complex. Cabernet contributes wonderful layers of
blackberry and wild strawberry entwined with spicy plum and dark
mulberry fruit. Tempranillo fleshes out the middle palate with
subtle tannins and underlying toasty oak, incorporates these
varieties into a stylish and expansively flavoured wine finishes
with a long lingering finish. |

Shiraz is an extremely versatile variety that
thrives in the temperate climate of the Kuitpo Vineyard. This is
demonstrated by the K1 Shiraz's dense inky colour, rich flavour and
smooth well integrated tannins.
The nose exhibits a bouquet of freshly picked
wild berries, spicy plums and black pepper along with a hedonistic
combination of ground allspice, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans
and cigar box aromas.
The rich bouquet is further enhanced on the
pallet with it's intense fruit flavours which linger on the palate.
This is further complimented by the seamless oak integration. The
French and American oak provide the soft tannins and lend spiciness
and a hint of vanilla to this wines profile.
The wine finishes fresh and lively with
harmonious acid giving the wine persistence and ample ability to age
gracefully.
To allow the superb characters of this wine to
show, we suggest decanting before service. |
