Established in 1843, Krug has specialised in producing solely prestige and exceptional Champagnes. With Krug, dedication to quality takes precedence over quantity of production.
Johann-Josef Krug, who was born in Mayence in 1800, but then moved to France, was taken on by the Champagne House Jacquesson in 1835. In 1843, he set up his own House. In 1846, he started selling his quality blends under the name Krug & Cie. At the end of that year he became a French national and changed his name to Jean-Joseph Krug.
Johann-Josef died in 1866 and it was his son Paul Krug who took over the House and spread the reputation of the House, travelling to numerous countries throughout the world.
In 1910 one of Paul’s six children, Joseph Krug, became the third generation of the family to take over the business. Then in turn Joseph’s son Paul succeeded. Today the fifth and sixth generations are managing the House: the brothers Henri and Remi Krug are now assisted by their respective children, Olivier and Caroline. Together they now apply the principles laid down by their founders, by using small oak barrels for the first fermentation and offering only prestige and exceptional Cuvée's.

Krug Grande Cuvée is the supreme expression of the Krug style - intense, inspiring, individual. Year after year, the Krug family recreates this exceptional Champagne by blending fifty wines or more from three grape varieties, twenty to twenty-five vineyards, and six to ten different years. Krug's traditional first fermentation in small oak casks reveals the rich and complex aromas of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once bottled, it is matured for an exceptional length of time in the cellars in Reims, developing the exquisite balance of intensity and elegance that is the taste of Krug. A gleaming gold colour, an extravagantly expansive bouquet, an almost creamy texture. Then, an explosion of sensations - luscious fruitiness, hints of hazelnut and toast, a final flourish of freshness... An inspiration. With every sip, a revelation... Krug Rosé is pure seduction - an extravagant, provocative Champagne that fuses the intensity and elegance of the Krug style with an excitement all its own. The vibrant personality of Krug Rosé is brought to life by intricate blending of carefully selected Pinot Noir grapes, briefly fermented on the skins, with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, whose richly individual aromas are revealed by Krug's unique first fermentation in small oak casks. Like all Krug Champagnes, Krug Rosé is matured for an exceptional length of time in the cellars in Reims, developing the distinctive combination of power and finesse for which Krug is renowned. In the glass, Krug rosé has a pale pink-gold colour with exquisitely fragrant bouquet that merely hint at the intense, exotic flavours it lavishes on the palate. Wild berries, intriguing spices, concentrated flowers merge in a silky-smooth harmony of subtlety and sensuality, dryness and delicacy, an enchantment that seems to go on forever... A captivating Champagne, a sublime self-indulgence. |

Krug Vintage is a statement – Krug’s definitive, one-off interpretation of the character of an outstanding year. The blend contains wines exclusively from that year. TASTE: Krug 1996 is extraordinary indeed – an extreme, eccentric champagne that first caresses the senses with its rich aromas, firm texture and full, ripe flavours, then dramatically explodes into jubilant freshness. Rich, radiant gold illuminated by slender streams of bubbles, Krug 1996 already promises a masterful combination of maturity and acidity. Fresh pear – Candied lemon – Ripe fruit – Honey – Gingerbread – Mocha. COMPOSITION: Krug Vintage is designed to blend vintage character with Krug’s house style. Krug selects young fermented wines which best represent the character of the particular year. The three grape varieties are blended to create harmony: Chardonnay’s elegance, Pinot noir’s fullness and the fruit of carefully selected Pinot Meunier grapes bring finesse and complexity to the wine. 1996 was also a landmark in the long history of the House of Krug, since Krug 1996 was the last vintage to be blended by three generations of the Krug family – Paul Krug, Henri and Rémi Krug, and Olivier Krug – all working together.
Olivier Krug, Directeur de la Maison
Krug, clearly remembers his grandfather’s reaction when
he first tasted the year’s newly fermented wines.
“Throughout his life, my grandfather shunned
exaggeration of any kind,” he says, “but on this
occasion he looked at us and said: ‘I think this may
well be the next 1928’. Eleven years on, Krug 1996 is
certainly a Krug to the power of Krug. Time will tell if
it is indeed a legend in the making.” |
