France - Burgundy - Puligny-Montrachet

Puligny-Montrachet, situated to the south of Meursault and to the north of Chassagne-Montrachet, shares with Chassagne a handful of the greatest white wine vineyards in the world. The grands crus of Le Montrachet and Bātard-Montrachet straddle the border between the two communes; those of Chevalier-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bātard-Montrachet lie entirely within Puligny. Of the commune's 1,260 acres of A.O.C. vineyards, 52 are occupied by these four grands crus, and an additional 247 are apportioned over eleven premier cru climats, which also enjoy this ranking for red wines. Only 300 hectolitres (3,330 cases) of red wine, of a total of 8,324 hectolitres (92,500 cases), are produced in the appellation in an average year.

Originally a Gallo-Roman village, "Puliniacus," as recorded in the documents of Pope Urbain II in 1095, became Puligny-Montrachet in 1879. Its preeminence as a white wine village is comparatively recent: early plantings were in Gamay, later supplanted by wheat, cassis and mulberries. Only since the second World War has it become virtually overtaken by Chardonnay vines, yet is without doubt the commune in which this variety finds its most perfect and aristocratic expression.

The wines of Puligny-Montrachet are generally characterized by greater firmness and depth than those of Meursault, and by greater refinement and delicacy than those of Chassagne. Maison Louis Jadot vinifies the production of several growers in the commune with which its holds purchase agreements based on the quality of the fruit from harvest to harvest. A traditional vinification in oak casks, the age and origin of which are determined according to the qualities of the vintage, is carried out to enhance the full-fruited depth and seductive bouquet, marked by distinct notes of ripe peaches, for which Puligny-Montrachet is famous. The wine's harmonious elegance persists in the lasting finish.
