Veuve Clicquot Champagne...
The remarkable Madame Clicquot is often
considered the first businesswoman of the modern era. Born
Nicole-Barbe Ponsardin, she was widowed in 1805 at the age of
27. She defied every convention of the day to take the helm of
her late husband's small Champagne house.
She enlisted help wisely, took astute risks
and made important technological innovations, leading the House
to world renown. One of her most significant triumphs was
sending a secret shipment of her Champagne to Russia in 1814 in
defiance of Napoleon's blockade--a great success.
Today the House of Veuve Clicquot is among
the most prestigious Champagne firms. Its extensive vineyard
holdings, many originally purchased by Madame Clicquot, stretch
throughout the top-rated areas of the Champagne region and are
unparalleled in size and quality.
As in Mme. Clicquot's day, bottles age in the
House's vast, vaulted cellars in Reims, portions of which were
constructed some 2,000 years ago by the Romans.

First, Brut Yellow Label
looks beautiful: golden-yellow, with a foaming necklace of tiny
bubbles. Next it is so pleasing to the nose: initially reminiscent
of white fruits and raisins, then of vanilla and later of brioche.
Note the fine balance
between the fruity aromas coming from the grape varieties and the
toasty aromas following the ageing in the bottle. The first sip
delivers all the freshness and forcefulness so typical of Yellow
Label with a symphony of fruit tastes following on. Here is a true
member
of the powerful Brut family, well structured, admirably vinous. The
lingering aromas echo and re-echo, with each fruit or spice note
distinct.
Veuve Clicquot Brut
Yellow Label manages to reconcile two opposing factors -
forcefulness and finesse - and to hold them in perfect balance. This
consistent power to please makes it ideal as an aperitif, and
perfect as the Champagne to enjoy with a meal. |

A fine, even
effervescence greets the eye, the wine being a beautiful yellow with
deep golden highlights. On the nose, it is rich in the scents of
ripe fruit (candied fruits, berry liquor), with hints of toasts and
brioche. In the mouth, the wine displays both roundness and
mellowness, combined with a delightful freshness due to its gentle
acidity.
The aromas of ripe fruit
are very noticeable. With its equilibrium tending towards sweetness
and fruited flavours, Veuve Clicquot Demi-Sec goes particularly well
with those desserts which have a fruit base: pear tarts, gratin aux
agrumes, charlotte aux apricots.
After additional
cellaring (two to three years, or even more in the right
conditions), Demi-Sec develops yet richer notes of praline or
toasts. It is then ideal with caramel- or praline-based desserts:
Paris-Brest, tarte Tatin, pears with caramel etc...
Do not hesitate to serve
Demi-Sec from a carafe, as they did in Madame Clicquot’s time. A few
minutes in a previously chilled carafe will allow the wine to show
off its rounded flavour, and all the splendour of its golden hue. |

The wine has a luminous
colour with radiant rose accents. The nose is elegant and generous,
with initial aromas of fresh red fruit (raspberry, wild strawberry,
cherry and blackberry) leading to dried fruits and biscuit notes
(almonds, apricots and brioche).
On the palate, the fresh first impression is followed by a fruity
harmonious sensation. In line with the style of the Veuve Clicquot
House, the wine is perfectly balanced and combines elegance and
personality.
The wine works its magic - this delectable champagne is beautifully
ample and full of charm.
It is a delicious wine in early bloom, a Rosé with character,
wonderful as an aperitif to be shared as a twosome or with dear
friends |

The Vintage Rosé 2002
has a dense, brilliant, deep-coloured robe, a delicate pink with
orange tints. The nose, characterised by their our red Bouzy wines,
reveals intense aromas of red and black fruits (especially griotte
cherries), enhanced with a touch of spices (pepper, vanilla). These
are followed by balsamic notes (liquorice, aniseed) that lend the
wine a certain
freshness. Both the wine
and rosé versions of the 2002 vintage are distinguished by an
elegance and aromatic complexity that will continue to intensify
over time. In the mouth the fruitiness recalls that of the superb
nose and is particularly dense. The wine also has an astonishing
long finish. The various different balances this champagne achieves
between structure and suppleness, and freshness and winey quality,
make it a satisfying and full-bodied champagne, ideal for serving
with impressive dishes characterised by rich and powerful flavours.
It could well be matched with a delicately spiced marinade of beef.
The structure and freshness of this champagne give it an ageing
potential of at least 20 years. |

The 2002 vintage has a
pale gold colour with silver accents. It has a brilliant aspect and
effervescence is lively and long-lasting.
At first, freshness immediately predominates, balsamic notes of
menthol and liquorice, together with hints of citrus fruits coming
to the fore. As the wine is agitated, fruitier aromas, including
winter cherry, Mirabelle plums and grapefruit, follow, accompanied
with a subtle hint of white flowers. After a few more minutes of
aeration, typical “Veuve Clicquot” notes of dried fruit (almonds,
hazelnuts) and pastries (brioche, marzipan) take the lead, crowned
by a veil of sweet spices like vanilla.
In the mouth the wine is lively and firm, yet soft and velvety. The
carefully chosen dosage provides a smooth elegant touch, with no
sense of heaviness. In the mouth, the flavours confirm the wealth of
notes perceived on the nose, with spicy fragrances resulting from
the dosage. The finish is
also contradictory, with a structure that is based both on freshness
and smoothness. This elegant, well-balanced wine will delight the
palate for at least the next15 years. |

La Grande Dame Rosé 1990
has a magnificent warm colour, with luminous, very deep gold red
tint. Effervescence is fine and persistent.
The quality of the
vintage is reflected in the intense and powerful nose. This richness
is accompanied by noble notes of dried fruits (black figs, dates)
and mild spices (vanilla) dominating a well-rounded, softer, almost
creamy base.
The richness of the nose
is confirmed in the mouth. La Grande Dame Rosé 1990, with a rare
concentration of aromas, reveals an exceptional, full volume. The
texture is dense, deep and tightly woven. The structure of the Pinot
Noir remains perfectly rounded. The silkiness of La Grande Dame
cuvée is already present and, with time, this sensation of sweetness
will develop. Gracious notes of black cherries and raspberries
dominate the finish.
La Grande Dame Rosé 1990
ends the trilogy 1988, 1989 and 1990 in a blaze of glory. This truly
great champagne is first and foremost a magnificent wine
accompanying refined cuisine. But connoisseurs will also enjoy it on
its superb merits, after an excellent meal and rejoice in its
exceptional flavour and taste. |
