Italy - Sicily - Mandrarossa

A long the stretch of the Sicilian coast which opens onto the Mediterranean sea - crossed by the gentle and sunny hills separating the temples of Agrigento and Selinunte - the cult of wine has been practised since the time of Magna Greacia. Here the mild weather, the fertility of the soil and the scrupulous work of the local people have created the vineyards of Mandrarossa.

Among the 6.000 hectares of vineyards, the Cantine Settesoli has selected the best 600 hectares for a special viticultural vocation. Today, besides the local vines such as Grecanico and Nero d'Avola, other international varieties have wonderfully acclimatized in Sicily, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sirah.

Grape Varieties: 100% Fiano.

Food Matching Note: Excellent as an aperitif and perfect to pair with antipasti, a selection of cold meats or tapas. Will compliment oily fish admirably and can be drunk with full flavoured white meats.

Tasting Note: Attractively golden in the glass with some hints of green around the edges. The palate is inviting, exotic and generous, displaying aromatic tropical fruits and hints of minerals. Medium bodied and dry with balancing acidity keeping the tropical fruits clean and refreshing, finishes dry, textured and crisp.

Vinification Note: The vineyards are situated between 200 and 250 metres a.s.l. around the town of Menfi. The vines are planted with a density of 4200 - 4500 per hectare and yield around 80 hectolitres per hectare. Harvest is manual between the 10th and 25th of August and the grapes are immediately cooled in contact with the skins to around 5 and 8°c for a short period of maceration. After a gentle pressing, the must is fermented in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of between 15 and 18°c for 15 days. Bottled in February of the year following vintage with no oak contact.

 EN3349

 Size

 75cl

 Price

 £7.75

Grape Varieties: 100% Nero D'Avola
Food Matching Note: Excellent with pasta dishes, braised red meats, game, hard spicy cheese.

Tasting Note: The Mandrarossa Nero D'Avola shows the true potential of Sicilian red wine. Richly textured with layers of damson, plum and liquorice spice flavours, elegant but powerful.

Vinification Note: The grapes are sourced from a variety of vineyards in the North Western corner of Sicily, which are all linked to Settesoli's detailed computer traceability system. This benefits the final complexity of the wine by selecting from a variety of altitudes, aspects and soil types, consequently the grapes are harvested in the first 3 weeks of September according to the individual ripeness of each vineyard.

The grapes are destemmed and crushed into temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and are fermented with a selected yeast culture between 22 and 25 degrees C with automatic pumping over of the juice and occasional micro-oxidisation in order to extract plenty of colour and fruit but keep the palate soft. After the alcoholic fermentation, malo-lactic fermentation is encouraged and the wine is further aged in tank before fining with Albumin, stabilisation and bottling on site at the winery. The wine undergoes a final period of bottle ageing before shipping.
