Italy - Tuscany - Antinori

The ancient Antinori family has resided in Florence since the early 13th century when they moved from Calenzano, a village between Florence and Prato where their presence is recorded in 1188. The family initially worked in the silk trade and joined the Guild of Silk Weavers in 1285.

The Antinori family’s first encounter with wine dates back to 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Guild of Wine Merchants to make the best use of the family’s country properties in Valdarno, around Florence.

However it was not until the 16th century that banker and merchant Alessandro Antinori made the wine from his estates famous in Italy and abroad, travelling from Lyons to Flanders, and from Spain to Algiers.

Wine was to remain the family’s passion and main business activity, so much so that in 1898 the "Fattoria dei Marchesi Lodovico e Piero Antinori" was created by brothers Lodovico and Piero, the sons of Marchese Niccolò – a direct descendent of that other Niccolò who purchased Palazzo Antinori in 1506 and poured his efforts into publicising Tuscan wines around the world and creating fine quality products.

For 26 generations the Antinori family have continued to make history.

It has been renowned for its wine production for over 1,000 years. The Antinori family bought the 325 hectares' estate around the abbey (which is own by Vallombrosian monks)in 1987, including the use of the monastery cellars. The Badia a Passignano estate has served to take Piero Antinori’s experimental work with Tuscan wines to a higher level, in preparation for the 21st century.

 £14.25

Grape Varieties: 90% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot and 5% Syrah.

Introduced in 1988 with the 1985 vintage, Pèppoli Chianti Classico DOCG is the archetypal modern Chianti Classico. In a departure from traditional Chiantis, Pèppoli combines the complexity and structure of a well-aged riserva with the fruity fragrance of a young wine. This style is made possible by a unique microclimate where east-northeast facing vineyards are planted in a small heat-retaining valley on mineral-rich rocky soils that are perfect for growing very fruity, lively Sangiovese. The wine further benefits from the use of better Sangiovese clones, severe grape bunch selection, delayed and cluster harvest when necessary.

Intense red fruit aromas, especially redcurrants and raspberries, are amplified by light hints of vanilla and coffee. This full-bodied wine is pleasantly lingering with a soft, sweet structure.

 Price

 £53.50

Grape Varieties: 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Tignanello is made exclusively from the vineyard of the same name which is situated on limestone and tufaceous soil on the Tignanello estate covering 47 south-west-facing hectares at altitudes between 350 and 400 metres a.s.l.. This was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern red wine blended with non-traditional varieties like Cabernet, and one of the first red wines in Chianti not to use white grapes.

Intense ruby red colour with light garnet hues. Complex and nicely harmonious aromas of tobacco, curry powder and blackberry and blackcurrant jam. A mouth filling deliquescent sensation on the silky palate enhances the sweetness making the 2003 vintage a very stylish version of the Tignanello. A light hint of sweet, nicely rounded tannins in the finish make the wine more persistent.
