Italy - Tuscany - Poliziano

Poliziano ranks among the top producers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, one of Tuscany’s most illustrious red wines. Vintage after vintage, this family-owned property near the charming hilltop village of Montepulciano sets the quality standard in this historic region. Winemaking at Poliziano is overseen by estate owner and head enologist Federico Carletti, who works in close conjunction with consultant Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s most esteemed enologists.

The Poliziano wines originate in the estate’s 120 hectares (296 acres) of vineyards in southern Tuscany’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. Here, the main grape is Prugnolo Gentile, a local clone of Sangiovese. Notably, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was one of Italy’s first DOCG-designated wines, and continues to command a place among the country’s most celebrated reds.

The Poliziano estate was founded by Federico’s father, Dino Carletti, in 1961. Since assuming leadership of the family business in 1980, Federico has spent close to three decades undertaking initiatives to continuously achieve the highest quality. His efforts have included extensive research into clonal selection, conversion to high density planting, and implementation of state-of-the-art winemaking technology. Today, Poliziano is a standout among its peers, and its estate-bottled wines are met with acclaim from the world’s most discriminating critics.

The winery is named for famed 15th century poet and scholar Angelo Ambrogini, better known as “Poliziano.” This nickname comes from Ambrogini’s birthplace, Politanus, the ancient name for the Montepulciano region. It is Ambrogini’s portrait that appears on each Poliziano label.
