Cloudy Bay was established in 1985 by the
founder of the Cape Mentelle winery in Margaret River, Western
Australia. Grapes are grown principally at three carefully
selected sites: around the winery in the Wairau Valley, at
nearby Renwick and in the neighbouring Brancott Valley.
The Marlborough region is located at the
northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, just across the
strait from Wellington. The Wairau Valley, on the floodplain of
the Wairau River, is the major grape growing area of
Marlborough. Flanked in the north by the Richmond Ranges and in
the south by the wither hills, it empties into the bay from
which the winery takes its name.
The soil is made up of deep sedimentary
gravel and silt deposited by the river. The valley enjoys a very
cool, maritime climate and more hours of sunshine than any other
region of New Zealand.
Cloudy Bay is committed to wines with
regional character. Emphasis is placed on the varietal
characteristics, with recognisable and inimitable estate style. |
