Quinta do Noval...
It has taken time, but now renowned port
producer, Quinta do Noval, has entered the world of dry red
wines.
This has been a development project ever
since the Quinta was purchased by AXA Millesimes, and was a
consideration during the extensive replanting programme on the
estate.
Produced from specially selected parcels of
new and mature vines around the spectacular estate high above
the Douro river, the wines are a blend of four classic port
varieties - Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cao, Touriga Francesa and
Tinta Roriz.
Managing Director, Christian Seely said "We
wanted to get it right, and it has taken 10 years to arrive at
the best grape blend and winemaking tactics to produce a dry red
table wine worthy of the Quinta do Noval name."

The second wine of
Quinta do Noval, Cedro do Noval is more fruit-forward than the Noval
Tinto, with refreshing acidity, and is ready to drink at present.
Cedro is a reference to the famous 100 year old cedar tree that sits
next to the Quinta, overlooking the Pinhao and Douro rivers.
“Caresses the mouth with
rich, refined blackberry, cream and dark plum flavours, flanked by
rich, chocolaty notes. The luscious finish shows mocha and liquorice,
with hints of savoury herbs. This really sings. Touriga Nacional,
Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca.”

“It is rather forward,
particularly at first, showing lots of primary fruit flavours,
tasting grapey and young. It is not a fruit bomb, though, and in
fact the fruit moderates a bit with air. Some brightness cuts the
fruit and oak. The wine demonstrates some grip and a reasonable
finish.”

Quinta do Noval Tinto is
a lusciously big wine that will however greatly benefit with aging
(and aeration). It is pumped over in stainless steel vats, and aged
in 100% French oak.
“This has grip,
concentration and a level of intensity that the Cedro does not. It
coats the palate more. It shows a fair bit of oak at the moment,
most of which should integrate nicely with age. Its mid-palate is
still fairly elegant in weight, and it presents a relatively smooth,
velvety feel, until the structural components rear their heads.”

“Very suave. Peppery at
first, then fills the mouth with ripe, rich red plum, cherry and
raspberry flavours, with seductive dark chocolate and hints of
truffle. Has plenty of liquorice notes, with silky tannins that
carry the flavours through the long finish. Touriga Nacional, Tinta
Cão and Touriga Franca. Drink now through 2014.”
