COUNTRY/REGION: France/Burgundy/Côte de Beaune.
WINEMAKER NOTES: Intense aromas of ripe red and black berries with spices and some notes of leather and tobacco. Silky tannins and very soft texture on the palate.
VINEYARDS: The grapes come from a single vineyard within the Côtes de Beaune in the Volnay Premier Cru Santenots appelation. The vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soils.
VINTAGE: Although winter had a few cold snaps and lingered on until March, it withdrew fairly rapidly, leaving us with a warm spring that benefitted the vines enormously as the budbreak took place earlier than usual. Summer was characterized by variable conditions, with alternating sunshine and rain, which created the ideal conditions for the development of fungal diseases. A programme of anti-fungal treatments was rigorously enforced, and the vineyards remained relatively healthy. Then the month of August started: hot, sunny, magnificent, with just the right amount of gentle rainfall - an ideal climate in which the grapes could ripen thoroughly. Harvest began on Tuesday 7 September under ideal conditions.
WINEMAKING: The fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 4 weeks. The wine was then aged in French oak (1/3 new) for 18 months.
TASTING NOTES: Situated on the chalky and stony red soil of a gentle slope, this vineyard produces structured and round wines with elegant tannins. Its alluring silky character displays soft red berries and spice, evolving to truffles and savoury notes. An all round charmer.
