Winemaker: Pete Bissell.

Region: Coonawarra, South Australia.

Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon 91% and Merlot 9%.

History: Established by the Late John Parker in 1985, Parker Coonawarra Estate is owned by Doug and Ann Rathbone of Yering Station fame. The 50-acre vineyard – predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with minor plantings of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc – is located at the southern end of Coonawarra and is planted on classic terra rossa over limestone soils. Terra Rossa Cabernet is vinified along traditional Bordelais lines with extended 30 day maceration and maturation in a combination of tightly-grained new and used French oak for 20 to 24 months.

Tasting notes: This limited bottling is deep in colour with a purple hue. The nose is fine and lifted with intense pure cassis aromas, liquorice and nuances of fine smoky French oak. The palate is intense and deep with layered rich cassis, blackberry fruit and mineral overtones. An elegant structure is complemented by good acidity and balance, the finish is long and lingering with fine suede like tannins.

Vintage notes: A wet winter started season 2005 with good rains recharging the aquifer, the best refill in at least three years. Generally dry conditions followed with very good canopies and good leaf area. March and April produced typical “Indian Summer” weather dry and warm, ideal conditions for ripening.
