The Market: In the last decade, there have been big changes within the South African wine industry. The advent of democracy and lifting of trade embargoes opened up new markets and exposure to international trends and the restructuring of South Africa’s previously nationalised vineyards has focused shift from grape farming to wine growing. Investment from overseas and a passionate new generation of winemakers, many of whom have served vintages in other areas of the world, has provided the structure for an industry which is increasingly innovative, market driven and globally competitive.
Growth in the UK market has been moderate in recent years, but is still the largest export market for South African wine. With excellent quality across the range of prices and styles, South African wine continues to excite consumers at many levels.
The Regions: Our selection from South Africa is as diverse as the country itself, sourcing blends from across the western Cape and from several distinctly different Wine of Origin regions. The Olifants River region in the north west of the country enjoys a steady climate with low rainfall and is a source of quality, affordable wines.
The Tygerberg vineyards of Durbanville, very close to Cape Town are situated mainly on the rolling hill slopes. With their various aspects and altitudes, the region is becoming particularly renowned for excellent Sauvignon and Merlot due to its deep soils, cooling sea breezes and night-time mists.
