A modern distillery dating back to 1971, the six stills at Mannochmore looked to have had a very short life span when the distillery ceased production in 1985. The distillery is located on the same land as its sister distillery, Glenlossie, and in 1989 it was decided that each distillery would produce alternately, for roughly a year at a time. This enables aging stocks of both whiskies to be maintained utilising one distillery's staff.
The distillery is also responsible for Loch Dhu, a black single malt, created by the addition of large quantities of spirit caramel. Loch Dhu received considerable criticism from both within and out the industry, however none the less it also gained something of a cult following. It is regrettable that production of Loch Dhu has ceased, as it was a unique product, and one which seems to have an on-going demand.

Nose: guava and pears; the fruity opening gives way to improbably soft barley. Taste: little more could be asked of a malt this age; the oak remains at bay whilst the barley offers simpering waves of varying sweetness and refinement. Just so damned beautiful. Finish: lazy spice and hints of tangy oak that points to something older than its age. Balance: such a gentle refined dram, you can scarcely believe the strength. 92 points - Jim Murray's 2009 Whisky Bible |
