Blended Scotch Whisky - Ballantine's

The Heritage of Ballantine’s can be traced back to the year 1827, when farmer’s son, George Ballantine, set up a grocery shop in Edinburgh. From there he began to supply a select range of whiskies to a distinguished clientele.

By the time the business was well established, George had brought in his two sons, trading as ‘George Ballantine & Son’. The business started to export blended whisky to a worldwide market and fast became synonymous with high quality, smooth-blended whiskies.

Two important awards followed fairly quickly after: in 1895, Queen Victoria awarded George Ballantine & Son with the Royal Warrant, the ultimate endorsement of the company’s prestigious reputation and in 1938, the company received the Grant of Heraldic Arms, recognising the company as an incorporation noble on the noblesse of Scotland.

The crest now appears on every bottle of Ballantine’s Scotch whisky featuring the Scottish flag and the four essential elements of whisky making.

Nose: a playful balance and counter-balance between grains, lighter malts and a gentle smokiness. The upped peat of recent years has given an extra weight and charm that had been missing.

Taste: sublime delivery: the mouth feel couldn't be better had your prayers been answered; velvety and brittle grains combine to get the most out of the juicy malts: a lot of chewing to get through here.

Finish: soft, gentle, yet retains its weight and shape with a re-emergence of smoke and a gristy sweetness to counter the gentle vanillas and cocoa from the oak.

Balance: as a standard blend this is coming through as a major work of art. Each time I taste this the weight has gone up a notch or two more and the sweetness has increased to balance out with the drier grain elements. Take a mouthful of this and experience the work of a blender very much at the top of his game.
