Classified by The Regulating Council as EXCELLENT, as well as the previous year. This harvest was not only good in quality but in quantity both in their own vineyards and in the whole D.O. Rioja. From the 170 ha that they own, in 2005 they had 154 in production. The volume of the harvest in 2005 was slightly smaller than 2004, due to the pollination. The vegetative cycle was perfect with no problems during all year.
The harvest started 10 days in advance from a normal year starting on September 24th with the White grapes and on September 27th with the red grapes in Viña Tondonia. They finished harvesting Viña Cubillo in October 22nd. They suffered a big storm on October the 12th that delayed the finalizing but didn’t damage the quality. The grapes entered the winery with a good concentration of colour, balance of alcohol content and acidity and good colour intensity. All of this made great wines with high vocation of ageing.
This is an immediately seductive wine with lifted aromas that entice the palate of macerated red berries and a touch of cured meats. The wine leaves a scent in the glass that is really quite magical, drawing you into a succulent palate which is broader and richer than its predecessor. Despite its six years in barrel and a further six in bottle, the 2005 Tinto Reserva manages to retain a core of rich red fruit which is perfectly complemented by the more mature, tertiary characters of its age. This is beautiful Tondonia with the same open feel as the 2001 and would be supremely enjoyable now whilst waiting for the 2004 to lose the last hint of its austerity. Don’t be fooled though, as with all great Tondonia Tinto Reservas the 2005 promises to hold its allure for many years to come.
