COUNTRY/REGION: Chile/Colchagua Valley.
GRAPES: 100% Malbec.
WINEMAKER NOTES: Originally produced to commemorate Caliterra’s 20th Anniversary in 2016, the winemaking team was tasked to create a special wine from a selected a parcel of the best Malbec on the estate. ‘Pétreo’ refers to the clay and sedimentary schists found in the premium hillside vineyard plot. The vineyard’s southerly exposure and diversity of terroir has resulted in a supremely elegant and complex Malbec. Red ruby in colour with blue hues, this is a wine with incredible vivacity. Floral, spicy and fresh forest fruit aromas are followed by a juicy, lively and well structured palate. The distinctive texture of its tannins makes this a very elegant Malbec with an exceptional personality.
VINEYARDS: Sourced from 12 year old vines on a South facing vineyard plot on the Caliterra estate, the vines are planted in a North East orientation to maximise the amount of sunlight the vines receive throughout the day. The Coastal Mountains are lower in Colchagua than anywhere else in the country allowing cool ocean breezes to enter the valley every afternoon, resulting in hot days and cool nights during the ripening season. The soil in the Petreo vineyard is Colluvial in its origin and granitic with ferric rock alteration. This terroir is one factor contributing to the unquie nature of this wine.
VINTAGE: The relatively early 2015 harvest resulted in a vintage with a fresh palate profile, elegant potency and concentration as well as a subtle aromatic expression.
WINE MAKING: 44% is fermented in stainless steel tanks and 66% in barrels of second and third use. 100% is then aged for 18 months, 88% in barrels of second and third use and 12% in clay amphoras.
TASTING NOTES: The Malbec grape, synonymous with Argentina, also flourishes on the western slopes of the Andes. This is a beautifully concentrated wine with intense fruit, subtle oak and smooth tannins.
