GRAPES: 70% Marlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Chateau Paradis Casseuil takes its name from the vineyards main plot of vines “Vignes du Paradis” ("Vines of Paradise") and the name of the commune of Casseuil. It is not known when or why these vines came to be associated with paradise, but it is obviously not an association that should be changed.
Acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984, the 23 hectare vineyard is spread over the three communes of Casseuil, Caudrot and Sainte-Foy-La-Longue in the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation, 50 km from Bordeaux. The vines consist of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (45%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The soil is clay-limestone in Caudrot and Sainte-Foy and clay-gravel in Casseuil. The average age of the vines is 35 years; the vineyard is managed by the team at Château Rieussec using traditional Bordeaux methods.
THE VINTAGE: Vintage 2017 was marqued by late frost on 27th and 28th April which caused severe damages in Bordeaux vineyards as well as other parts of France and in Europe. The crop was historically low, the lowest volume since 1991 therefore characterised by considerable heterogeneity in quality in the properties affected. Nevertheless, quality was there for those who were not affected which was the case luckily for Paradis Casseuil.
TASTING NOTES: Deep purple colour. The nose is flattering dominated by soft spicy notes, grilled almonds and discreet toasted scents. In mouth it is well-balanced, round, medium structure with soft tannins. Peppery aromas at the end.
