Chateau Teyssier is located a few kilometers northeast of St. Emilion in the appellation known as Montagne-Saint-Emilion. The ancient vineyard dates back to the 15th century, and rests on a hillside of clay and limestone. The entire property spans a total of more than 40 hectares, with 24 hectares resting in the Montagne-Saint-Emilion appellation and roughly 18 hectares lying in the Puisseguin Saint-Emilion appellation. The majority of the vines are planted with Merlot, with additional plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years.
The vines at Chateau Teyssier have recently benefited from innovative changes in the vineyard in an effort to bring the grapes to optimal ripeness and quality level. Efforts have been made to increase the leaf canopy while deleafing around the grapes to facilitate more even ripening.
In 2012, the grapes were hand-harvested, vinified in cement, then aged for a full two years in new and one-year-old oak barrels. In keeping with the vintage, it is defined by freshness and elegance, rather than power. On the nose, expect aromas of red and black currants, and a hint of liquorice. The palate has a clear, persistent mineral character. Drink now to 2022.
