VINEYARDS: All Contino wines are made from grapes exclusively grown on the 62 hectare estate located in Laserna, near the town of Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa wine making region. This was the first single estate concept in the Rioja region and was established in 1973.
VINTAGE: The 2012 harvest was of low yield in the DOC Rioja due to drought that characterized this vintage. This was the second consecutive year of drought which forced Contino to carry out a a higher grape selection and to harvest earlier to avoid over-ripeness. The grapes arrived at the winery in excellent health.
WINEMAKING: The Grapes were hand harvested in mid-September at optimum maturity. The vines were picked over twice, each time the perfectly ripe bunches were collected. Fermentation took place in 100hl wooden vats between 28° and 30° for 8 days, followed by slow static decantation. Ageing took place in French and Hungarian oak, for thirteen months, including the malolactic in new French oak casks, racked every two months. The wine was aged in bottle for a year. This single varietal is only produced in exceptional years.
