GRAPES: 100% Pinot Noir.
WINEMAKER NOTES: The 2013 Famous Gate Pinot Noir opens with enticing aromas of plum, baked cherry, and cinnamon. The same notes echo on the palate, enriched by layers of savory leather and earth. With its silky texture and mouthwatering acidity, this wine invites enjoyment now and promises further depth and complexity with added cellaring.
VINEYARDS: For the past 25 years, Domaine Carneros has carefully cultivated 12 separate clonal selections in a wide variety of soils, providing a complex range of Pinot Noir expressions. Their certified organic (CCOF) vineyards, passion for Pinot Noir, and dedication to artisan winemaking methods make the Famous Gate a wine worth seeking.
VINTAGE: A great harvest! The 2013 harvest began on August 16th after a near perfect growing season. Yields were slightly higher than average, with excellent quality. Even growing season and moderate temperatures through harvest allowed us to pick the fruit slowly, and consistently, as it was perfectly ripe.
WINE MAKING: Grapes were gently de-stemmed and cold soaked for five days to extract color and aromatics. Fermentation took place in in small open vats, and the caps punched down three times daily. An exhaustive barrel stave selection and ageing program tailored to the winery by fine Burgundy coopers, including Remond, Rousseau, and Cadus, lend supple tannins and warm spice to the wine. The wine was aged in barrels for 14 months and the final blend was racked once before bottling without fining or filtration.
TASTING NOTES: The pinnacle of Domaine Carneros’ still wine production, winemakers select from 13 different Pinot Noir clones planted on the estate’s organically farmed vineyards. Traditional winemaking, including 11 months barrel ageing, gives intriguing complexity, which is further enhanced by 11 months ageing in bottle prior to release.
