WINEMAKER NOTES: A deep, bright violet-red colour, our 2014 Aconcagua Costa Syrah offers a very perfumed floral nose reminiscent of violets and lavender, along with the classic black pepper aroma typical of cold-climate Syrahs. Subtle touches of incense, hazelnuts, and coffee add to the overall complexity. On the palate it is lively and refreshing with delicious red and black fruit notes that recall strawberries, blueberries and murtilla and combine with the incense and pepper aromas to produce a wine that is complex, juicy, and expressive. With its firm yet fine, ripe tannins, this wine will only increase in complexity and depth as it ages.

VINEYARDS: The grapes for our Aconcagua Costa Syrah come from the Manzanar vineyard, located barely 7,5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Planted by Errazuriz in 2005 and 2009, the soil is thin layer of loamy texture and placed on a base of clay and metamorphic rocks, providing the mineral notes present in the wines that are grown in these vineyards. The Syrah is planted in the eastern sector of the vineyard, facing north, which allows the grapes to ripen fully. The drip irrigated, vertically trained vines are planted in thin (40-80 cm deep) loamy soil overlaying slate metamorphic subsoil, which lends great elegance, minerality, and complexity to the wines grown here.

VINTAGE: The 2013-2014 growing season was moderately warm, with low yields and lower than average rainfall in the winter months followed by a dry spring. Budbreak was delayed due to a cold spell in mid September. Cool growing conditions had the beneficial effect of the extended hang time and slow ripening of the grapes enabling them to preserve fresh character, aromatic intensity and beautiful mineral notes.

WINEMAKING: The grapes were hand picked and placed into small boxes no larger than 12 kg and carefully transported to the cellar, where they were closely inspected, crushed and deposited into stainless steel tanks. Fermentation was carried out at 24-28° C (75-82° F), and the wine was left on its lees for a total of 10-25 days of maceration. 100% of the wine was aged in 25% new French oak barrels for 14 months.

TASTING NOTES: From the a cool coastal vineyard of the Aconcagua Valley, this Syrah exhibits a fine balance of concentration and finesse. Black fruit flavours are joined by hints of white pepper betraying the cool-climate nature of this exciting wine.
