COUNTRY/REGION: Chile/Aconcagua Valley.
GRAPES: 100% Chardonnay.
WINEMAKER NOTES: .
VINEYARDS: The grapes for our Aconcagua Costa Chardonnay come from the Manzanar vineyard, located barely 7.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Planted by Errazuriz in 2005 and 2009, the soil is thin layer of loamy texture and placed on a base of clay and metamorphic rock (slate/schist). This provides the mineral notes present in the wines that are grown in these vineyards.
VINTAGE: 2016 was a very challenging year for Chilean wines. The El Nino current delayed the grape development as it caused heavy rains and cooler temperatures. Consequently, the harvest took place two weeks later than previous years and only the best and healthiest grapes were selected. The result is very interesting as the slow maturity contributed to decrease the sugar and alcohol levels. Therefore, 2016 is characterized by wines with great elegance and freshness; a more Bordeaux style vintage.
WINE MAKING: Grapes were hand picked during the early hours of the morning, whole-cluster pressed and cold decanted in stainless steel tanks. The use of native yeasts, as well as cultured strains of yeast, during a wild fermentation contributes greater complexity to the wine. Fermentation took place at 18°-22°C, and approximately 50% of the final blend underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine remained on its fine lees in french oak barrels for ten months.
TASTING NOTES: A stunningly complex Chardonnay; toasty oak richness balanced with a steely, mineral backbone and crisp acidity betraying its cool-climate roots.
