WINEMAKER NOTES: Fresh and expressive Chardonnay with a bright yellow-green colour. Aromas of citrus, quince and pear are complemented by soft toasted notes that add complexity and texture. Well structured, this Chardonnay has a refreshing acidity, medium body and a long finish.

VINEYARDS: The grapes for this Chardonnay come from the La Escultura vineyard, located in the Casablanca Valley just 32 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. Warm summer days, morning fog and fresh evening breezes that blow in from the coast, allow for a gradual ripening process of the grapes that helps to preserve their aromas, flavours and acidity. The soil has fine clay and sandy-loam textures, with low vigour potential. The vineyard was planted in 1997 with clones 96 and 548, each of which produces a different fruit expression that provides great complexity to the final Chardonnay blend.

VINTAGE: The challenging vintage of 2016 performed different scenarios throughout the season, with a cool spring and a warmer than average summer. A rainy and cool October was followed by pleasant spring days in November, promoting a healthy flowering and fruit set. At the beginning of the summer temperatures higher than the historical averages. February was warm, with oncoming sunny weather interspersed with cool morning fog, prevailing through to the end of the growing season. All of these conditions delivered wines of outstanding vivacity and character.

WINE MAKING: Grapes were handpicked in the early morning between March 1st and 4th in small boxes and carefully transported to the winery, where they were whole-cluster pressed and cold decanted in stainless steel tanks. The use of native yeasts along with the larger number of strains of yeasts during a wild fermentation contributes greater complexity to the wine. the juice was fermented in used French oak barrels for 15 to 20 days, and then underwent 60% malolactic fermentation.

TASTING NOTES: Fermented with ‘wild’ yeasts for added depth and a unique character, this is a full-bodied and rich Chardonnay with creamy ripe fruit and toasty, spicy oak. Complex and elegant.
