COUNTRY/REGION: New Zealand/Hawkes Bay.
GRAPES: 100% Chardonnay.
UNIT: 1 x 75cl Bottle.
WINEMAKER NOTE: This is a full bodied Chardonnay which displays vineyard derived complexity and elegance. Naturally made with a 'hands off' approach, it is both food friendly and age worthy. It vividly exhibits the peach notes of Bay View Chardonnay with the more crisp mineral characters of the Ohiti Road stony soils. Subtle oak and lees derived complexity from barrel ageing add further interest.
VINEYARD: This wine is an individual barrel selection of two Hawkes Bay vineyards: Brian Howard's dry farmed vineyard in Bay View sited on what was the old tidal estuary of the Esk River before the 1931 earthquake and the Davies Vineyard on the stony soils of Ohiti Road on the western bank of the Ngaruroro River. Both vineyards bring their own characteristics to the finished wine.
VINTAGE: The Spring saw cool conditions and lower than average rainfall, however despite changeable weather around flowering it was generally successful with good fruitset. Shoot & bunch thinning was carried out as needed in select vineyards and overall the health of the vines was excellent, resulting in a highly satisfactory harvest.
WINEMAKING: The individual grape parcels were hand harvested and whole cluster pressed. Only low juice yields were taken. The lightly settled juice was run off to barrel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Some barrels were allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation to naturally soften the acidity. The finished wine was left on lees till bottling with occasional lees stirring. The final blend was a barrel selection of 54% from the Howard Vineyard and 46% Davies Vineyard.
TASTING NOTES: Seriously grown-up Chardonnay with all the weight, texture and elegance you would expect at this level. It has been hand crafted from vineyard to bottle, with specific site selection, hand picking, natural barrel fermentation and just the right amount of ageing.
