COUNTRY/REGION: New Zealand/.
GRAPES: 100% Pinot Noir.
WINEMAKER NOTES: This is a dark-fruited and complex style of Marlborough Pinot Noir. it is a robust wine with complex aromatics of plums and herbs with a subtle oak influence..
VINEYARDS: Stony vineyard sites in the Wairau Valley (40%) and further south in the cooler Awatere Valley were selected for this wine. The Wairau Valley fruit provides the blended wine with structure and tropical fruit notes while the Awatere Vineyard offers acidity and pungent notes of nettle, pea pods and gooseberry. The vineyards are all carefully managed and crop thinned in the pursuit of quality fruit.
VINTAGE: This wine is a blend of fruit from both the upper reaches of the Awatere Valley and the Southern Hills sub region of the Wairau. The soils are a mix of stony river and glacial deposits in the Awatere and heavier clays in the Wairau. The vines are trained on an upright vertical shoot positioned trellis and managed intensively to produce low yields of excellent quality fruit. Shoot thinning, bunch thinning and leaf plucking are all employed in the pursuit of quality.
WINEMAKING: The fruit was destemmed and soaked before fermentation in open-topped fermenters. 80% of the wine was fermented with wild yeast and hand plunging employed to gently extract tannin and colour. When dry the fruit was pressed and run to both tank and barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged in French oak barriques of varying age for 11 months before blending and bottling.
DESCRIPTION: The Marlborough region, with its high sunshine hours and cool nights, is ideally suited to producing perfect Pinot. The result is a heady blend of plum and cherry fruits with intriguing underlying spice notes.
