Esk Valley / 2017 Valley Estate Sauvignon Blanc

COUNTRY/REGION: New Zealand/Marlborough.

GRAPES: 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

ABV: 13%

WINEMAKER NOTES: This is a very intense and powerful wine. True to its Marlborough origins, its flavours are a mix of ripe tropical fruits, citrus and cooler notes of green fruits and fresh herbs. It is rich and full bodied but a crisp dry finish provides freshness and length..

VINEYARDS: Vineyard sites in the warm Wairau Valley (70%) and further south in the cooler Awatere Valley were selected for this wine. The Wairau vineyards are planted on the "Southern Clays" with heavier soils providing structure and body to the blended wine. The Awatere Valley vineyards are planted on gravelly free draining soils and due to the cooler nature of these sites, pungent notes of nettle, gooseberry, citrus and pea pod are found in the finished wine. The vineyards are all carefully managed with shoot and crop thinning to limit yield and maximise quality.

VINTAGE: Colder weather in spring led to a longer than usual flowering season, resulting in a looser bunch structure with smaller bunches. Summer temperatures were unusually mild for Marlborough, regulated by cooler easterly breezes and light cloud cover. Intermittent autumn rains slowed ripening which meant our harvest plans had to be flexible whilst we waited for dry weather periods and classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc flavours to develop.

TASTING NOTES: Powerfully intense and pungently aromatic, this is Marlborough in a glass. Using grapes from handpicked vineyard sites, Gordon Russell puts his own unique stamp on New Zealand’s signature calling card.
