GRAPES: 100% Chardonnay.
WINEMAKER NOTES: This is an elegant, complex and creamy textured Chardonnay which displays vineyard derived complexity and flavours of peach, grapefruit and cashew. Naturally made with a ‘hands-off’ approach it is both food friendly and age-worthy and vividly exhibits the complexity of Bay View Chardonnay. Further interest is added with subtle oak and lees developing complexity from barrel ageing. Enjoy with rich seafood dishes especially crayfish.
VINEYARDS: This wine is an individual barrel selection from the Howard's Bay View vineyard. Situated on the former tidal estuary of the Esk River prior to the 1931 earthquake and planted in 2001 with Burgundy clone 95, the Howard's Vineyard produces powerful wine with noticeable peach flavours. The vineyard is dry farmed and intensively managed with low yields to maximize the quality of fruit from the site. Shoot thinning, bunch thinning, leaf plucking and hand picking are all employed.
VINTAGE: A mild spring and warm start to 2017 gave the vineyards a good start and meant that careful management in the vineyard was needed for shoots & canopies. Changeable weather over the harvesting window gave us a challenge but with judicious picking decisions the crops came in clean and well balanced.
WINEMAKING: The individual vineyard parcels were hand harvested and whole cluster pressed. Only low juice yields were taken. The unsettled juice was gravity fed to barrel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts and post ferment some barrels were allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation to naturally soften the acidity. The finished wine was left on lees until bottling with occasional lees stirring.
DESCRIPTION: Seriously grown-up Chardonnay with all the weight, texture and elegance you would expect at this level. It has been hand crafted from vineyard to bottle, with specific site selection, hand picking, natural barrel fermentation and just the right amount of ageing.
DELIVERY: All our wines are stored in our importers bonded warehouse’s, which have the optimum environment for fine wine storage, by carefully regulating temperature, humidity and other microclimatic factors.
