COUNTRY/REGION: New Zealand/Hawkes Bay.
GRAPES: 99.2% Merlot and 0.8% Pinot Noir.
This dry style Rosé is widely regarded as New Zealand's premium Rose and has won many awards since its first vintage in 1991. It is an excellent choice with many foods or as an aperitif. It is a beautiful pale pink, dry to taste with aromas and flavours of redcurrants, strawberry and peach.
VINEYARDS: This wine was grown in two inland Hawkes Bay merlot vineyards, each selected for its ability to produce a full favoured and elegant Rosé. Both vineyards are gravel based river terraces, one at Puketapu, the other on the banks of the Ngaruroro River on Ohiti Road. Both are intensively managed with both shoot and bunch thinning practised, allowing us to pick fully ripened grapes at low sugars in the pursuit of an elegant and dry style Rosé.
VINTAGE: The 2019 harvest was one of the finest Winemaker Gordon Russell has ever experienced. Spring was cool and wet and the weather over key flowering periods seemed unkind at the time. Crops were eventually down as much as 25%, but this alone does not explain the quality of the fruit at harvest. Summer was fine and warm with intermittent rain keeping a drought prone province green, the vines seemingly never under any stress. Veraison though had proceeded quickly over a fine spell of weather which would give consistency to the ripeness of berries. Harvest arrived slightly early but no records were broken here. In fact it seemed very much a normal harvest until we approached our first pick. The berries though had developed abnormally thick skins blessed with an abundance of colour and flavour. This coupled with a spell of fine weather over harvest period, allowed us to pick when full ripeness had been achieved. Both whites and reds have excelled.
WINEMAKING: The individual vineyard parcels were pressed immediately upon arrival at the winery, resulting in juice with little colour or tannin. After settling the juice bright, the fermentation was conducted at low temperatures to capture the vibrant red fruit flavours we seek in our Esk Valley Rosé. The ferment was stopped when almost dry, leaving a small quantity of residual sugar to balance the natural acidity.
