Country/Region: South Africa/Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
Unit: 5 x 75cl Bottles.
One of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea – Hamilton Russell has pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the finest in the New World.
This wine has been Barrel Matured for 10 months and has gone through 100% Malolactic fermentation in 45% 1st, 40% 2nd and 15% 3rd fill French oak barrels. In general 2014 was a challenging vintage, but the standout feature was the high level of physiological ripeness at much lower alcohols than usual - a highly desirable, but generally elusive situation for much of the Cape winelands. The wines have benefitted with a rich depth of character and lively tension, without the sweetness and weight of higher alcohol.
Pinot Noir 2010: Beginning to develop a beautiful savoury nose, this is a tight, refined vintage with a characteristic Hamilton Russell Vineyards tension and tannin-line. This is a wine that will age well. The first South African Pinot noir to achieve a "classic" 95/100 score from Neal Martin for Robert Parker.
Pinot Noir 2011: A less ripe feminine vintage with an initially more red-fruit profile and lower alcohol. This wine has been stylistically placed by tasters in the Cote de Beaune, towards Volnay, rather than our more typical Cote de Nuits reference. Balanced and "fine" the wine is becoming more interesting with age.
Pinot Noir 2012: This is a voluptuous, open and sensuous wine with a deep dark fruit and spice profile and softer tannins. Once again back in the Cote de Nuits stylistically, this wine came 29th on the Wine Spectator Top 100 wines of the year - to date the highest position for a South African red.
Pinot Noir 2013: One of our favourites. Layered, dark and complex with a rich structured palate which bodes extremely well for a graceful old-age. 94/100 from Neil Martin for Robert Parker with comments on its stylistic similarity to top Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru. Less an easy read, more fine literature.
Pinot Noir 2014: Another lighter, tighter, finer vintage with beautiful poise and a saline minerality with a liquorice spice we often find in our Pinot noir. A sommeliers' choice trophy winner in South Africa and likened stylistically to Chambolle-Musigny by several tasters for its grace and purity.
