Jean-Luc Colombo / 2013 Cornas "Terres Brulees".

COUNTRY/REGION: France/Rhone Valley.

GRAPES: 100% Syrah.

ABV: 13.5%

UNIT: 1 x 75cl Bottle.

WINEMAKER NOTES: The 'Terres Brulées' name is taken from the 'roasted earth' of the Rhône region. Made from 100% Syrah of low yielding vines 20 to 60 years in age, grown on the steep granitic soil slopes of the right bank of the Rhône river. This wine, the first of Jean-Luc's private collection of four top Cornas wines, is a blend of up to 20 parcels which are truly representative of the Cornas appellation, and all of which Jean-Luc considers to be of suitably high quality for this cuvée. A very elegant wine with notes of ripe fruits such as blackcurrant and raspberries complemented by more spicy hints of liquorice and coffee. Very rich in the mouth, with powerful yet elegant tannins, spicy with great length.

VINEYARDS: Planted on granitic steep slopes on the right bank of the Rhône River. Blend of up to 20 slopes which are very representatives of the Cornas appellation.

VINTAGE: A cold spring delayed the growth cycle of the vines and harvest was roughly three weeks later than average. The quality of the grapes was excellent but quantities were well down on a typical year.

WINEMAKING: Hand-harvested in small cases. After de-stemming, the vinification takes places in temperature controlled vats with maceration lasting for 3 weeks. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 18 months.(1/3 new 2/3 recent).

TASTING NOTES: ‘Terres Brûlées’ takes its name from the ‘roasted earth’ of the Rhône region. 100% Syrah from low yielding vines, some 20 to 60 years in age, this blend of up to 20 parcels truly represents the Cornas appellation, all of which Jean-Luc considers to be of high enough quality for this signature cuvée.
