COUNTRY/REGION: France/Loire Valley.
GRAPES: 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
UNIT: 1 x 75cl Bottle.
WINEMAKER NOTES: On the nose there are rich aromas of pineapple, pear and vanilla, which are echoed on the palate.
VINEYARDS: From the estate's oldest vines, planted on pebble rich clay-limestone slopes known locally as "caillottes". All vineyard processes are carried out in an environmentally-friendly manner, adapted for each terroir.
VINTAGE: A long drawn out growing season with temperatures well below the seasonal norm, led to a long period of drought through the summer, leaving harvest dates much later than usual. 2013 is a vintage that won't reveal its true colours for a good few months, but in the end is likely to impress.
WINEMAKING: The grapes are pressed very slowly and the juice is cold settled. The wine was fermented and aged in oak barrels (30% new oak) in Joseph Mellot's ancient cellars in the heart of Sancerre. Fermentation lasts 2 to 7 months and the wine is aged for 20 months. Barrel ageing adds a new dimension to the wine's structure giving vanilla flavours and good ageing potential.
TASTING NOTES: From the oldest vines in the Joseph Mellot estate planted on the pebbly clay limestone soils or ‘caillottes’. This prestige cuvée is fermented and aged around 20 months in oak in the historic cellars of Sancerre. Complex and intense. Aromas of acacia, mango and coconut complement a great structure and generous finish.
