WINEMAKER NOTES: This wine shows prominent blackcurrant and mulberry flavours on the nose. On the palate the 2010 vintage reflects a wine with finesse, fruit and supported by well-integrated firm French oak tannins. Due to its balance, this wine can be matured in the bottle for another ten years.
VINEYARDS: Every year the grapes for the Family Reserve wine are harvested from a single superb block on our Groote Zalze farm in Stellenbosch. Each of the three main soil types in this block contributed characters to the finished wine. The composition of the berries varied due to the different sand and clay soil percentages of the various Oak leaf and Clovelly soil types.
VINTAGE: 2010 is considered an exceptional year for quality in Stellenbosch. Spring and early summer temperatures were above-average and a long ripening period fostered the development of good Shiraz flavours.
WINEMAKING: Harvesting by hand, each pocket of fruit was handled separately, using the hand sorting tables to ensure that only the purest fruit was fermented. After a three-day cold maceration period, fermentation started after the wine was inoculated with natural yeast. The perfect balance in the wine's tannin structure was achieved through a combination of pump overs in stainless steel tanks and punch-downs in open fermenters. Maturation took place for 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels.
TASTING NOTES: Every year the grapes for the Family Reserve Shiraz are harvested from a single superb block on Kleine Zalze’s Groote Zalze farm in Stellenbosch. Full-bodied with rich aromas of berry fruit complemented by sweet spice, smooth, smoky tannins and a long sumptuous finish.
