Kleine Zalze / 2015 Cellar Selection Pinotage

COUNTRY/REGION: South Africa/Coastal Region.

GRAPES: 100% Pinotage.

ABV: 14%

UNIT: 1 x 75cl Bottle.

WINEMAKER NOTES: The wine shows a deep red colour with intense mulberry and black plum fruit flavours. Maturation in the French oak barrels added a soft complexity with well integrated firm tannins. A subtle and stylish wine with a hint of spiciness which originated from the cool climate grapes.

VINEYARDS: The grapes were harvested from two blocks from Stellenbosch (False Bay) and the Durbanville region.

VINTAGE: With the wet winter there was a good build-up of reserves in the vines and a much earlier than normal start to Spring weather meant we had an early bud-break. The growing season was, however, one of the coolest in recent memory and the moderate temperatures ensured a relatively long and even ripening period that allowed us to harvest beautifully ripe fruit with fantastic natural acidity.

WINEMAKING: After picking, the grapes were destemmed only and transferred to tank for “wholeberry” fermentation. Half of the wine was fermented in open cement tanks with regular punch downs and pump overs to extract tannin and colour. The remaining half was fermented in closed stainless steel tank and pumped over every 8 hours. The wines were pressed before complete alcoholic fermentation to ensure soft tannins and avoid any over extraction. The wine was matured in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels for 12 months.

TASTING NOTES: This is a subtle and stylish Pinotage. The wine shows a deep red colour with intense mulberry and black plum fruit flavours. The tannins are well integrated and there is a hint of spiciness on the finish.
