Dedicated to working in harmony with nature to produce remarkable artisan wines, Newton Vineyard transforms fruit of uncompromised quality into wines of distinctive character.
VINEYARD: The 2013 Unfiltered Merlot was predominantly harvested from the Newton estate on the hillsides of Spring Mountain. Comprised of 112 unique blocks, the vineyards are intertwined with lushly forested terrain creating distinct microclimates, perfect for producing wonderful complexity in the resultant wine.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS: The 2013 vintage in the Napa Valley was warm, dry and early. Despite the ongoing drought conditions over much of California, our vineyards secured just enough winter and spring rainfall to make it through the dry summer months. The grapes were able to fully ripen in ideal conditions in late summer and into fall. 2013 will likely be a celebrated vintage for Napa with powerful and intense flavours, balanced acidity and long rich and mouth filling textures.
VINIFICATION: Once harvested, our Merlot grapes were sorted using an optical sorter that inspects individual berries to ensure uniform, perfect ripeness. The must then underwent five days of a cold soak followed by seven days of fermentation using native yeasts. The wine then rested on the skins for up to a month to develop additional complexity before pressing and aging for 14 months in French oak barrels, 30 percent of which were new.
TASTING NOTES: Smoky, blueberry aromas are punctuated by whiffs of earth and sweet caramel. The palate is dark, brooding and inky, with Dutch cocoa and mocha mingling with ripe fruit flavours, including satsuma plums. The texture is firm and rich with gravelly tannins and a robust, masculine structure.
FOOD PAIRING: Unfiltered Merlot is made for meaty meals, such as slow-cooked ribs, beef Bourgogne, lamb braised in Merlot, Cassoulet, and rare, char-grilled steaks.
DELIVERY: All our wines are stored in our importers bonded warehouse’s, which have the optimum environment for fine wine storage, by carefully regulating temperature, humidity and other microclimatic factors.
