THE CUVÉE: The 2008 Brut Vintage from Champagne Pol Roger is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the “Montagne de Reims” and the “Côte des Blancs”. Produced only in limited quantities the Brut Vintage 2008 has been aged for 8 years in The Pol Roger cellars before being disgorged and released onto the market.
TASTING NOTES: Excellent purity and refinement on the nose, very focused. Autolytic complexity, toasted bread and pastry, but also red fruits and a hint of spice. The palate shows excellent depth of fruit but also a very firm, taut acidity to complement the richness. Long and persistent finish, very well integrated dosage and built for the long-haul. More refined than the 2002 (and a very different style) was at this stage of its development. Drink 2018 – 2040.
PRESS NOTES: "Really quite broad and ripe on the nose with mildly floral notes and a hint of putty. Really very dramatic! Even a hint of marzipan. Creamy texture with a little bruised apple acidity. Admirably long. Really exciting. Is this a worthy successor to the 2002? 18/20" Jancis Robinson.
"A wine of stunning elegance and precision. It’s delicately honeyed with hints of nuts and truffles, toast and red berry fruit. There’s a touch of spice too, an absurdly fine and persistent mousse and a gloriously long finish. It’s an absolute beauty and, unless my memory is messing with me, the best Pol I’ve ever had. In short, it’s what fine vintage champagne is all about." Jonathan Ray, The Spectator.
"And if you’re feeling really fancy, this is bloody marvelous. Pol Roger are hailing this as the best vintage since I don’t’ know when. It’s young but already so rich and toasty with brown apples, wild flowers and an amazing freshness to it. Power and delicacy! What more could you want?" Henry Jeffreys, Spectator Life.
