WINEMAKER: David Guimaraens.
Like those of Vargellas, the wines of the beautiful old property of Terra Feita are an essential component of the Taylor’s Vintage Port blend. The wines of Terra Feita express sensuous hedonism and earthiness. Their dense blackberry and cassis fruitiness is overlaid with wild herbal aromas, tarry notes of liquorice and tobacco and a palate crammed with thick mouth filling tannins. It is the harmony and tension between the contrasting styles of these two great properties which fundamentally define the character of Taylor’s Vintage Ports.
Quinta de Terra Feita is located on the west bank of the River Pinhão, the narrow tributary which winds north to south through a sinuous steep-sided valley before flowing into the Douro at the village of Pinhão. The Pinhão Valley is one of the most historically important areas of the Douro. In the heart of the original 1756 demarcation, it has been recognised as a source of the very finest Ports since the origins of the Port trade and its steep terraced hillsides are ringed with well known properties.
In certain years, however, when a Taylor’s Vintage is not declared, the best port wines of Terra Feita have traditionally been bottled as a ‘single Quinta’ vintage port.
These vintages were initially bottled for the partners’ own cellar. However Taylor’s was later to become the earliest shipper to develop a market for this increasingly important category of single quinta vintage port. The wines are normally released when ready to drink – at least ten years after the harvest.
THE VINTAGE: The winter preceding the 2005 harvest was extremely cold and dry leaving the reserves of water severely depleted after an already dry and hot 2004.
The growing season started later than usual as a result of the cold weather and the shortage of water. The whole growing season was marked by lower vigour and small berry size for all grape varieties.
From May 16th until 6th September there was no further rain. However, in spite of the extreme heat and drought like conditions, the ripening process continued normally, although at a slower pace than usual.
Fortunately, the dry summer conditions were relieved by steady rainfall between 6th and 9th September, giving the vines the critical relief that they needed, enabling them to complete the ripening process and deliver a perfectly ripe and well balanced crop.
TASTING NOTES: Deep purple black colour with magenta highlights. Classic black fruit aromas of cherry and cassis provide a dense and impenetrable backdrop for wild scents of mint, resin and gumcistus. On the palate the same intense black fruit character merges with rich dark flavours of and liquorice and chocolate. The tannins are muscular but well integrated and the wine finishes with an explosion of berry fruit and spice.
