COUNTRY/REGION: New Zealand / Hawkes Bay.
GRAPES: 100% Syrah.
This enticingly fragrant Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District shows intense aromatics of plum, herb garden and underlying spice. The rich and concentrated palate of dark cherry and plum combine with savoury oak complexity. Elegantly balanced, and finely textured with chalky tannins this wine has a long finish. Distinct and age worthy with the ability to age gracefully for up to 12 years from vintage, in good cellar conditions.
VINEYARDS: The fruit was grown in our Omahu and Twyford Gravels vineyards in the heart of the Gimblett Gravels grape growing district where the soils are made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel with varying degrees of silt and sand.
VINTAGE: The 2014 season has left an indelible print on our wines. The maturing vineyards and attention to detail on the land and within the winery complete the framework. These wines will age gracefully over time and continue our path in the pursuit of wine quality.
WINEMAKING: The fruit was 100% destemmed and then crushed. The cap was managed by a combination of hand plunging and pumping over. Fermentation took place in open top fermenters at a temperature of 30-34° C, spending 20-28 days on its skins. The wine was matured for 20 months in French barrique (50% new).
