GRAPES: 13% Viura.
An extremely aromatic wine with fruit such as pear, apple, white peach all being highlighted. This is complemented by sweet spice and balsamic notes from its barrel ageing.
VINEYARDS: From selected vineyards in Rioja Alavesa.
VINTAGE: The 2018 harvest began at C.V.N.E. on the 19th September and ended on the 26th October. Given the adverse weather conditions of this year’s harvest, timing of key tasks in the vineyard was critical to obtaining high quality grapes. The harvest began with a dry autumn, following one of the worst droughts in history, and winter began with long awaited rains, cold spells, frost and snow, which were common in past years. There then followed a cold, wet spring and a warm summer. Considering that this was a year with high rainfall, the harvest took place calmly and selectively.
WINEMAKING: A manual selection of grapes at their optimum point of ripeness. Once in the winery, the grapes were cold macerated for 6–8 hours to create more structure and flavour to the finished wine. The grapes were then lightly pressed and the juice transferred to new American oak casks for fermentation for between 15 and 20 days at cellar temperature, between 16 and 20°C. The young wine remains on its lees and stirred periodically so that they hang in suspension. The wine is regularly tasted to assess its flavour evolution, until we decide on the optimum moment to rack it and bottle it.
